T-Mobile Free Data For Life

I just wanted to take a moment to share with you something I feel every Private Investigator, Process Server and Security Professional should take advantage of. T-Mobile offers a 200mb data plan for FREE. That’s right, absolutely FREE. No they are not paying me to talk about this service. Well… I suppose they are because I’m taking advantage of this amazing FREE offer myself. Prior to activating my FREE Data for Life plan with T-Mobile, I was on a 3gb data plan through AT&T. I paid $30 per month for this plan so that my iPad Air would get data service while working in the field. I use my iPad a lot in the field. It comes in handy for running vehicle registrations, background checks and performing simple web inquiries. If you are not using a tablet in the field currently, I suggest you start. You will love the convenience of it, and I feel it will make you more productive.
Here is what you need…
  • First you will need to purchase a T-Mobile Sim Card. I recommend buying it from Amazon because of the price and FREE shipping (with Amazon Prime Membership). This should cost you around $5 one time.
  • Second you will need a device capable of accepting a Sim Card. The device will need to be either a T-Mobile device or an unlocked GSM device. I personally use an iPad Air that I purchased through AT&T. If you didn’t know, all of the iPads that AT&T sells are factory unlocked and will work with T-Mobile.
  • Lastly you will need about 15 minutes to set up the plan. The beauty of this plan is that T-Mobile does not ask for your credit card number. That’s right, they can’t charge you even if they wanted to.
Set-up Instructions…
Create an account
  1. Turn off Wi-Fi on your tablet.
  2. Open the browser on your tablet.
  3. Go to tmobile.com/connectme, which will guide you through creating your Connect Me account.

Access Connect Me

Winter Weather Response Plan

With most of the country being hit with extreme winter weather, I thought it would be good to take a moment to discuss ways to be prepared in case of a power outage, an ice storm or a blizzard. Currently in Knoxville we are faced with a 1/2″ of ice on most of our roads making travel treacherous. Up North there are areas with over 6′ of snow preventing families from leaving their homes.

So what should we do to be prepared for a winter storm?

The CDC suggests we create checklists covering several different categories of preparedness: Communication, Heating, Cooking /Lighting, Food /Safety and Water. They also suggest a preparedness checklist for the vehicle in case you are caught out in the storm. Below are some tips for creating your own winter weather response checklists.

Communication

  • Have a weather radio available
  • Have plenty of extra batteries – Make sure you have different sizes on hand.
  • Keep cell phones, tablets and laptops charged – Accessories such as the Zagg Powerbank 6000 or the Mophie Powerstation Plus are great items to have to provide that extra boost of power to your wireless devices.

Mophie Powerstation

Zagg Powerbank 6000

  • Ensure you are able to receive Wireless Weather Alerts on your devices – Apps such as AccuWeather and Weather Channel will deliver real-time alerts to your smartphone or tablet.
  • Sending text messages will conserve more battery on your devices than voice calls – Limit the amount of phone calls you make.
  • Save a list of all emergency contacts on your phone including: power companies, emergency services, family, friends, co-workers and insurance companies – Keep a paper copy of this list as well.

Heating

  • Keep extra blankets, sleeping bags and coats available
  • Have space heaters or kerosene heaters – The Honeywell Surround 360 space heater is a forced air heater that provides heat in all directions.

Honeywell Surround 360

  • Have extra firewood on hand (if you have a fireplace)
  • Have a fire extinguisher and smoke detector on hand

Cooking /Lighting

Everready 6V Floating Lantern

  • Waterproof matches
  • Candles
  • Propane stove – never use indoors

Food /Safety

Ikea Portable Can Opener

  • Baby formula (if you have a small child)
  • Prescription drugs and other medicine
  • Have a first-aid kit
  • Rock salt for melting walkways
  • Cat litter for traction on sidewalks or driveways

Water

  • Leave all water taps on a slight drip to prevent pipes from freezing
  • Open kitchen cabinet doors under the sink
  • Have bottled water on hand or fill the bathtub
  • As a last resort, snow can be melted into drinking water – It’s best to boil it for a couple of minutes before drinking to kill any bacteria.

Vehicle List

  • Cell phone
  • Car Charger
  • Shovel
  • Windshield Scraper
  • Emergency Weather Radio
  • Flashlight
  • Water
  • Snack Food
  • Extra hats, coats and gloves
  • Blankets
  • Chains or rope
  • Flat tire repair
  • Flares
  • First-aid kit
  • Small tool kit
  • Road maps
  • Waterproof matches
  • Towels

Zagg Rugged Book Review

For the past three weeks I’ve been testing a new iPad Air case from Zagg (the makers of InvisableShield) called the Rugged Book. This is Zagg’s take on a ruggedized keyboard case. It is reminiscent of the police-grade laptops often times seen inside police cruisers. The case is a two-part case with a magnetic hinge. The first section is the iPad case itself. It is very rugged. It’s made of a very thick, sturdy polycarbonate inlaid with durable silicone and a stainless steel plate. The buttons are easily accessible, as well as, the charge port. The only downfall I can find is case has no built-in screen protector. For me its not a huge deal as I always apply my own screen protector as soon as I open a new iPad. The lip around the screen is significant, protecting the screen if the case lands screen side down. The second piece is the detachable keyboard. The keyboard is very responsive with backlit keys. It’s very bright when typing in dark environments. I’ve been very pleased with the key spacing. The keyboard section is made of the same tough polycarbonate. When the case and the keyboard are combined you get a very nice laptop style presentation with multiple viewing angles. The case is a little heavy, but that’s to be expected in a heavy duty design. Overall I’m very satisfied with this unit and would recommend it to any Private Investigator or Security Officer who uses their iPad in the field.

Child Custody Investigation Tips

Child Custody Investigation Knoxville TN

Child Custody cases are emotionally trying on everyone involved. In order to successfully win a custody case, one must be prepared. Below are some tips that can help you prepare and build a case for a custody battle.

  • Document any violations of the court order the other parent may be committing.
  • Keep a detailed diary or calendar of the specific days each child was with you and with the other parent. Note the times of pick up and return of the child. Outline activities that the child engaged in. Do not pump your children for information. Note the person who picked up and/or returned your child. If you are receiving or paying child support, note each check number, the date of receipt/payment, and the amount of the check.
  • Document overnight stays by members of the opposite sex when the children are present. It is not desirable to have new boyfriends or girlfriends living with you or spending the night with you when the children are present. It can be upsetting to the children and can appear to the court that you put your need to be with your new friend above your children’s needs and that you lack good judgment concerning the children.
  • Obtain the driving record of the other parent and the driving records of anyone whom you permit to drive your children.
  • Always be certain that the children use seat belts. Car seats must always be used until your child is four years old, 40 inches tall, and weighs 40 pounds.
  • Document attendance of school functions and parent conferences by the other parent. If the other parent does not supply you with information on these events, take the initiative to get the information yourself.
  • Document if your child is calling persons other than the other parent “mom” or “dad.”
  • Document anything that is said negative about you by the other parent, his or her relatives, or new partner in front or your children.
  • Document the taking any recreational drugs by the other parent. Document any paraphernalia in the home of the other parent.
  • By and large, a witness can only testify to facts that he or she observed personally. You cannot testify to what your children have told you. You can, generally, testify to what the other parent has told you. If your children have told you things about the other parent, his or her lifestyle or the activities that are engaged in when the children are present, most likely the only ways to get this information into evidence are:

    1) have the children see a psychologist or psychiatrist and describe these things;

    2) ask the other parent about these incidents and hope he or she admits to them; or

    3) witness them yourself or attempt to obtain another witness. Note the persons present at the time of any significant incident so we will know whom to call as witnesses.

  • Keep in contact with potential witnesses so that they can easily be contacted they are needed to testify. Make sure you have current addresses and telephone numbers.
  • Document any plans to move the children any great distance from their current residence, except under the most necessary of circumstances. Document any threats of taking the children away so you cannot see them.
  • Document the selection of child care providers or babysitters by the other parent. Obtain background checks, licenses, etc. on these persons.
  • Document the time spent with the children by the other parent. Document any times the children are dropped off with relatives during visitation of the other parent.

Tips for Going Paperless

Paperless? Just as it sounds; no paper. The thought of going paperless as a Private Investigator or Security Professional may sound scary. Almost everything we do requires a paper trail. Trust me, I had the same thoughts at first, but after several months on living the Paperless Lifestyle I would never go back. Going paperless reduces clutter and reduces stress! Stress you ask? Yes, Stress! Organizing all of your documents into a searchable, online database such as Evernote.com reduces the stress of searching for hours through piles, binders or filing cabinets. It’s the greatest thing I have done for myself and my business. Getting Started… There are several steps you will need to take to get started on your paperless journey. The first step is planning your attack. I’m a huge advocate of “plan your work; work your plan”. If you are like most people, you have a system you use to organize your documents. For example, you may not want to store your business receipts in the same place as your household documents. So before you begin scanning documents, you want to make sure you get them in the right place. I use a couple apps to organize my paperless world. I prefer to use Shoeboxed.com for my business receipts and Evernote.com for everything else. I also have a Dropbox.com account that I only use for specific, shareable business documents. Shoeboxed.com accepts digital receipts from your scanner, smartphone or even the mail. They have a team of humans who manually verify each receipt for accuracy. They are an excellent company I have put my trust in for many years. Evernote.com is a great place to scan your miscellaneous items to. Evernote turns all of your scanned PDF’s info searchable documents you can access anywhere. Let’s say you scan your grocery loyalty card into Evernote. All you will need to do at the checkout line is open the Evernote app and search for the store’s name, loyalty card, etc. Dropbox is basically an online “my documents” folder. I use Dropbox to store documents related to specific business projects I am working on. Each of these apps have a FREE version that will work just fine while you get your feet wet, but I recommended the premium versions for ease of use and storage capacity. The next step is the “purge”. The purge is by far the most time consuming step in converting to a paperless lifestyle, however, it is also the most rewarding and liberating. The purge is the process of taking all of your existing paper documents and converting them into digital, searchable PDF’s. My purge started with 3 piles of paper. The first was the largest pile which i named “scan and shred”. This pile was comprised of documents that did not need to be kept after being scanned into my online database of choice. Documents included: old bills, instruction manuals, recipes and greeting cards. The second pile I named “scan and keep”. This was a relatively small pile. The documents in this pile were birth certificates, car titles, etc. The last pile I created was strictly a “destroy” pile. The documents in this pile were very old bills, credit card offers and other documents I had no business keeping. When I began my purge, I made sure I had all of the proper tools. I recommend purchasing a ScanSnap scanner, a good shredder and recycling bin. Once you have all of your piles sorted… Let the purge begin!! When my purge was complete, I carried out 9 garbage bags of shredder waste, 6 bags of recyclable paper and 2 trash bags of miscellaneous garbage. I didn’t know how much larger my house could feel without all that paper laying around. The final step in going paperless is preventative maintenance. This is also the most important step. You have completed your purge and are reaping the benefits of paperless lifestyle; now you have to maintain that lifestyle. You will need to put a system in place to ensure that you aren’t having to re-purge over and over again. I started by contacting all of my financial institutions and switched my paper statements to email statements. Once I receive the email, I just forward them to my included Evernote email address and they are automatically backed up on the server. The next thing I did was purchase a small mail sorter which I organized into the same 3 categories I used during my purge. You have to be very strict with the physical mail however. My rule is 2 days or 1 touch. If I touch it, I must commit to doing something with it. If it has been in the bin for more than 2 days then it has to be addressed. You can figure out what works best for you. Supplies… I touched on a few supplies you will need to go paperless above, but I wanted to explain my recommendations just a little further. The most important device you will need is a good scanner. The scanner is the backbone of a paperless lifestyle. The scanner I use is the ScanSnap C1300i. I really like this scanner because it is small and compact. It is capable of scanning the front and back of documents at the same time. It can also be programmed to scan directly to Evernote. I purchased my ScanSnap scanner from Amazon.com. The next important item you will need is a good shredder. I am personally using the Fellows 99ci. It is a medium, professional grade shredder capable of shredding multiple documents at the same time. I strongly recommend investing in a good shredder the first time around, otherwise you will end up like I did with a bunch of broken, cheap shredders. You will be shredding a lot (especially during your purge). In closing… There is a liberating feeling once you clear out all your paper clutter. The key is to buckle down and press though it. Take breaks, but stick with it. For more tips, search paperless online. There are many resources available to help you begin and maintain your paperless journey.

As always, maintain a dedication to excellence and pay attention to the details.

Ion Air Copy Wireless Scanner

As a Private Investigator or Security Professional you may find yourself needing to scan documents while out in the field. It’s often cumbersome to carry a laptop and a scanner around with you. In steps Ion Air Copy. Ion Air Copy is a portable wireless scanner which produces is own WiFi hotspot and is capable of scanning to Apple and Android phones and tablets. JPEG photos are stored to your device and are available to use with other apps including: email, Evernote, Dropbox and many more.

I tested the Ion Air Copy with a Macbook Pro, iPad, Samsung Galaxy S4 and a Samsung Note 10.1 tablet. The scanner worked great across all platforms. The image quality is good and the speed is reasonable. I experienced no jamming or errors during my test. While using the Mac desktop app I was able to save my scans as a PDF as well as a JPEG image. I found that very useful. The only drawback I found was the scanner would only allow one page per document. This makes it difficult to scan multi-page documents effectively. Overall, I suggest everyone who works in the field to invest in one of these convenient scanners.

More from Ion:

Scan documents and photos into your tablet, smartphone, or computer instantly with Air Copy from ION. Air Copy is an ultra-portable Wi-Fi scanner that gives you the freedom to scan any photo, business card or document up to size A4 directly into your tablet, smartphone, or computer.

With high-resolution 600 DPI scanning, Air Copy scans a document or photo onto your tablet, smartphone, or computer in seconds and ensures you won’t lose any quality during the process. Its free scanning app even allows you to view your scan in real-time on your device’s screen. You get to watch as your documents and photos are transformed right before your eyes—Air Copy actually makes scanning fun! And with no cables to worry about, set up is clean and easy.

No more searching for a fax machine in the airport. No more having to reposition your photo over and over on your home scanner. Air Copy makes scanning fast, easy, and fun.

PI Gear: The Unconventional Stuff

Hollywood has helped shape everyone’s idea of the stereotypical Private Investigator gear; Badge, gun, binoculars, camera and a very stylish fedora. Although some of that may be accurate, there is a lot of gear that doesn’t make the Hollywood movies.

First of all, when you’re working surveillance anything can happen and you must be prepared for it. Generally surveillance is 90% boredom (sitting; waiting) and 10% action. Hours can go by with no activity. An investigator must be prepared for all natural occurrences. For example, let’s say you need to go to the bathroom but you can’t leave your post. You would need to make sure you have TP in your gear bag. I know it sounds gross, uncouth or just plain primal, but “it” happens and it’s better to be prepared than have to find a leaf or old burger wrapper. The subjects of the surveillance work on their time, not ours.

So we know to pack our cameras, extra media, binoculars, note pads, pens, chargers and such. But sometimes we forget the simple things that will make our jobs so much easier. Here are some things that you can put in your gear bag that you may not think about: extra change of clothes, batteries, snacks (trail mix, chips, crackers, sandwich, etc.), bottled water, cash (parking tolls, bar tab, information), cigarettes (even if you don’t smoke, cigarettes can buy you good information sometimes), prepaid cell phone, voice recorder, hand warmers (sometimes you can’t leave the vehicle running in the winter due to the exhaust giving you away), pretext scripts, pretext business cards, pretext stationary, pretext car door magnets (“utility contractor” is a good pretext for car door signs) and of course there are many more items that you can pack but you get the picture.

Next time you prepare to head our for a long day (or night) of surveillance, rethink your gear bag. Be prepared for anything that may happen.

As always, pay attention to detail and stay dedicated to excellence.

Be safe,
